Know what’s awesome?
Being passionate and driven to help others achieve success! You feel like the wind in their sails.
Know what’s not awesome?
Being more passionate and driven about someone’s success than they are. You feel like you’re dragging them every step of the way.
Whether you’re a therapist, a fitness trainer, a business coach, a teacher, or mentor — if you’re in a position where you help people achieve their goals, then you know that one of the most important traits you need to have is a true passion for helping others.
What about the second most important?
Knowledge? Expertise? A proven track record?
All of those things are very helpful. And they might even be #’s 3, 4, and 5.
The second most important trait — at least in my thousands of hours of working one-on-one with clients — is a top notch set of good boundaries.
For your clients — so they aren’t calling you at 2 am to let you know that their toaster broke and it ruined their day (that’s more of a 10 am conversation, right?)
AND for you. So that you’re not going out there and killing yourself for someone else’s dream while they sit back and refuse to move. That is a recipe for burnout.
As someone who works in a field where the burnout rate is exceptionally high, I know what burnout looks like and how to avoid it.
And having good boundaries is a critical first step.
Their life. Their dreams. Theirs to achieve. Theirs to fail. Yours to support.
You do amazing work. You help people change their lives for the better. You need to stay healthy enough to continue doing that work.
You feeling exhausted and frustrated is not your mission or your purpose.
You feeling like your clients are sucking the life out of you is not a recipe for continuing that amazing work that you already do.
We (me and everyone else) need you healthy.
Because the world needs more of what you have to offer.
And that probably sounds a little fluffy coming from me — but it’s true.
So it needs to be said…. even if it’s fluffy.
I want to help.
Work with me and let me support you in your work. Let me help you shift perspective, so you can tap back into the drive and desires behind why you jumped into this work in the first place.
